Qatar Gears Up for New Academic Year

Qatar prepares for the 2026-2027 academic year, welcoming 419,373 students back to 649 schools and kindergartens on August 30.

Qatar is preparing to welcome approximately 419,373 students back to schools and kindergartens for the upcoming academic year. The Ministry of Education and Higher Education announced the readiness of 649 educational institutions across the country to receive students. This extensive preparation ensures a smooth start to the new academic term for hundreds of thousands of learners. The full effort involves numerous schools and kindergartens, reflecting a nationwide initiative to facilitate the return to education for all students. The Ministry's proactive measures show its commitment to providing a high-quality learning environment for every student in Qatar.

School Readiness and Expansion

Administrative and teaching staff members returned to government schools on August 23, marking an initial step in the preparations for the new academic year. This return allows for organizational tasks and curriculum planning before students begin classes. Staff members are actively engaging in professional development and preparing classrooms to ensure a welcoming and productive environment. This key preparatory period also involves reviewing educational policies and implementing new pedagogical approaches where necessary. The educational landscape in Qatar is also expanding with the addition of six new government schools. These institutions are set to open their doors for the upcoming academic year, increasing the capacity and accessibility of public education across the country. The new schools are expected to accommodate a growing student population and enhance educational infrastructure, providing modern facilities and resources for learners. This expansion is a strategic move to meet the increasing demand for educational services and to support Qatar's vision for a knowledgeable society.

Safety and Health Initiatives

The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) is set to launch its 2026-2027 Back-to-School campaign on August 30. This initiative will continue until September 10, focusing on health and well-being as students return to academic settings. The campaign aims to raise awareness about important health practices, including hygiene, nutrition, and mental well-being, essential for students' successful return to school. Health education resources will be distributed, and various health-related activities are planned to engage students, parents, and school staff. The PHCC's efforts are designed to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for all students.

In parallel efforts, traffic safety measures have been completed around 674 schools across Qatar. This full program aims to enhance student safety during their daily commutes. The Ministry of Social Development and Family has also introduced its 'Walk Your Kids to School' campaign, encouraging active and safe travel to educational institutions. This campaign promotes physical activity while also emphasizing the importance of road safety awareness among children and parents. It serves as a reminder for community members to prioritize pedestrian safety, especially in school zones.

The School Zone Traffic Safety Programme has assessed and upgraded areas surrounding 675 schools since its launch in 2013, indicating an ongoing commitment to road safety. Measures implemented around school zones include a maximum speed limit of 30km/h, designed to protect students and pedestrians. This reduced speed limit is a critical component of the safety strategy, mitigating risks for children crossing roads or walking near school premises. Other enhancements include improved signage, pedestrian crossings, and traffic calming measures to create safer routes for students.

Student Support Programs

The 'First Step' initiative aims to support approximately 10,700 newly enrolled Grade 1 students across public schools as they begin their academic journey. This program focuses on easing their transition into the school environment, providing foundational assistance for new learners. The initiative includes orientation activities, introductory lessons, and support systems designed to help young students adapt to their new routines and surroundings. It recognizes the importance of a positive initial experience in shaping a child's educational trajectory. Simultaneously, Qatar National Library has organized 'Ready for School' workshops, designed to prepare children for the upcoming academic year. These workshops contribute to student readiness by offering activities and resources that help familiarize them with learning routines and expectations. These sessions often cover topics such as literacy, numeracy, and social skills, ensuring children are well-equipped for the challenges and opportunities of the new academic term. Both initiatives reflect efforts to provide full support for students as they commence a new phase of their education in Qatar's public school system, fostering an environment conducive to learning and growth from an early age.
